Are you a fan of the Drudge Report? If so I just saw that the Associated Press demanded that the Drudge Report remove 7 articles with excerpts of wire service stories. Bloggers everywhere in the universe are trashing The Associated Press!
When the news about the "take-down" notices spread, the AP said it will develop its own policy about the acceptable use of its articles by Web publishers, according to today's NY Times..basically creating their own rules.
BUT a copyright owner can't unilaterally define fair use, which is a legal concept that varies per situation. In fact, the very idea that the AP could set the parameters of fair use is preposterous: The fair use doctrine is itself an acknowledgment that people are legally entitled to use copyrighted content in ways owners don't like.
So this has caused an outrage and some people are already banning the use of anything the AP writes!
