In Favre We Trust

The entire state of Wisconsin and faithful Packer fans from across the country had their hearts skip a Brett, I mean beat, Wednesday as reports spread that Brett Favre was ‘itching’ to return to the Green Bay Packers for his 18th NFL season.

These reports have been denied by Favre Wednesday evening, through a text message to a local Mississippi newspaper saying, “It’s all rumor.” Despite Favre’s comments, many fans would still love to see number 4 give it one more run.

Favre’s heart and dedication have never been in question when addressing his desire to play football but over the last three seasons, every off season has become a Favre soap opera.

‘To retire or not to retire,’ has been a constant debate for Favre; leaving fans on edge, not know who would be taking snaps for the Packers each upcoming season.
The media frenzy over the last twenty-four hours has given some Packers fans a glimpse of hope Favre will again quarterback the 2008 Packers. Other fans wish Favre would just stick with his word and stay retired. Similar to Steve Young replacing the ‘God-like’ Joe Montana with the San Francisco Forty-Niners in the early 90s, Aaron Rodgers has unrealistic shoes to fill, succeeding Favre.

This media circus has not made the transition any easier for Rodgers.

Born and raised in Wisconsin and bleeding ‘green and gold’ since birth, it’s tough for me to imagine going to Lambeau Field and not seeing Favre lead the Pack. In many ways Favre has been a part of every household in Wisconsin. I will always have a place in my heart for “Uncle Brett” and I too hope Favre laces it up for one more season.
